CEMEX and Synhelion Achieve Breakthrough in Cement Production Using Solar Power | News

Clinker is produced by fusing limestone, clay and other materials in a rotary kiln at temperatures around 1500°C. Fossil fuels are typically used to heat the kiln and are responsible for around 40% of the direct CO 2 emissions from the process. Replacing fossil fuels entirely with solar power is a game-changer in industry’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Synhelion and CEMEX R&D teams have set up a batch production pilot unit to produce clinker from concentrated solar radiation by connecting the clinker production process with the Synhelion solar receiver. The pilot was installed in IMDEA Energy’s ultra-high concentration solar tower, located in Spain. Synhelion’s solar receiver delivers record temperatures exceeding 1,500°C. The solar receiver heats a gaseous heat transfer medium and thus supplies the process heat required for the production of clinker.

The pilot is the first successful calcination and, more importantly, the first successful clinkerization ever performed using only solar energy. The clinker was used to produce cement and was then processed to produce concrete. In the next phase of their joint research and development project, CEMEX and Synhelion aim to produce solar clinker in larger quantities as they work on an industrial-scale pilot project at a cement plant.
