NIA files indictment in 2020 Star Cement Factory explosion, 4 HNLC terrorists arrested
In a new development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Tuesday filed an indictment against four defendants in connection with an explosion that took place behind the Star Cement Factory Colony Lane staff quarters in December 2020. The The explosion was carried out by Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), an illegal association notified under the UA(P) Act of 1967.
Meanwhile, the indictment was filed in a special NIA court in Shillong on Tuesday. Previously, a case was initially registered on December 13, 2020 at PS Lumshnong, East Jaintia Hills district in Meghalaya after which it was re-registered by NIA on March 15, 2021.
“Investigation revealed that the explosion was carried out by HNLC terrorists because the owner of Star Cement Ltd failed to pay the illegal tax demanded by Marius Rynjah @ Hep Koit, the SS Finance cum Socio-Cultural Secretary of the HNLC,” said a statement from the NIA.
The names of the four defendants were also identified in the indictment, including Emmanuel Suchen, Bobby Marwein, Sainkupar Nongtraw and Marius Rynjah. They have been reserved under various sections of the IPC, including 120B, 324, 449, 3 and 4 of the Explosive Substances Act, 10 and 13 of the UP(A) Act, among others.
Explosion at Star Cement Factory Colony Lane premises
The incident happened on the evening of December 12, 2020, when an explosion occurred at the Star Cement factory premises at East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya. During this, approximately two workers present at the site of the explosion were injured.
