Rodney Benson, Sr. – Bemidji Pioneer

Rodney Eugene Benson, Sr., 89, of Puposky, MN died Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at Sanford Bemidji Medical Center surrounded by his family.

Rodney was born July 19, 1932 in Puposky, MN, the son of Ray and Alice (Vonau) Benson. He went to school in Pleasant Valley and Crookston. He grew up in the Nebish area until he was 18 when they moved to Fairbanks, AK. There, he and his brothers Robert and Richard carried bagged cement from the wagons to the cement plant. He returned to Minnesota at age 20 to farm. He married Martha Jacobson in 1955 where they continued to live in Nebish. He was in partnership with his brother Richard in buying and selling feeder pigs. Between 1964 and 1967 he served on the Beltrami Electrical Board and also between 1970 and 1990 he served as Beltrami County Commissioner. Along with farming, he bought and sold trucks while also being in the trucking business, hauling hay, lumber, grain, cattle, and more. He also had a particular passion for his John Deere tractors.

He is survived by his sister, Elaine (Larry) Wynne Johnson, his sons, Rodney (Kim) Benson, Jr., Michael (Brenda) Benson and Douglas Benson, 6 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife Martha, his grandson Steve, his grandson Brian and his brothers, Richard and Robert Benson.

A celebration of life will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Bemidji North Town Hall with lunch served. Condolences can be left at
